Consumed by grief, Christian makes a grim decision. He will kidnap Lady Ava so that her family will feel the pain of loss as keenly as he feels the loss of his own sister. Taken By The Duke The Pleasure Wars Book 1 edition by Jess Michaels Romance eBooks
I am an avid reader of Jess Michael's books. She is truly gifted in her writing and character development, because I always walk away cheering for the couple to get together in the end. While I would give most of her books five stars, I would give this one 10++++ stars if I could."Taken by the Duke" is the best book that Jess Michael's has written in my opinion. The characters are torn between rivalry, anger, compassion and love. The two leads, Christina and Ava, are drawn physically from the beginning despite their vicious family histories of revenge and hatred. Ava's compassion and attraction to her brother's rival, Christian, slowly brings the hardened Duke out of his shell of hatred and his duty to defend this long standing family grudge. You can see them fall in love, both emotionally and physically, and your own emotions begin to ache for these two leads.
Their chemistry seeps through the pages and draws you immediately into their story. You heart feels for Ava and Christian's star-crossed love, as they battle their emotions and inevitable fall out when Ava's brother (and Christian's rival) comes to find them. It's a beautiful story that you won't be able to put down from start to finish.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romances.

Taken By The Duke The Pleasure Wars Book 1 edition by Jess Michaels Romance eBooks Reviews
Taken by the Duke is a wonderful novel about revenge, and old feuds and above all the power of forgiveness and a determined heart. These characters really come to life.
Christian and Ava's family have been at war for years and no one even knows the reason why they are at odds but for generations the men of the family are trying to cause havoc and ruin. Christian is filled with rage over his sister's death and he blames Ava's brother for it. To even the score he plans to kidnap Ava and ruin her reputation.
Ava is a fine character. She is tired of the anger between the families; it has affected her entire life. She has no suitors and realizes she probably never will because what man wants to jump into a family that is in a generations long battle with another prominent ton dynasty.
When Christian kidnaps Ava she does not become hysterical, instead she sees her captivity as the perfect opportunity to make peace between the families. She will willingly go to Christian's bed if he drops the vendetta against her brother. Christian agrees and so begins a passionate and sensual romance.
Ava is not a double minded miss; she does not try to escape and keep a truce at the same time. No, she is all in and she recognizes that Christian is lonely and hurting over his sister's death. She also realizes that she has the power to heal him with her kind heart. What the reader sees is a visible transformation in Christian. He is like a lion with a thorn in his paw, roaring and putting up a show of bravado but he desperately needs a brave woman willing to come close enough to remove a stinging hurt.
This is a beautifully written story, a Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending.
Ava Windbury and Christian Rothcastle are from two families who have feuded for generations. When Ava's brother runs away with Christian's sister, an escapade that leads to her death, there is only one thing for the grieving brother to do - kidnap Ava and ruin her.
There's a lot of sex here despite Christian's early resolve to ruin Ava in name only. I expect that in a Jess Michael's story, but I wish there had been more depth and backstory to the two main characters. They are both likable enough, but there seemed to be more lust than love here. It's a mashup between Romeo and Juliet and Beauty and the Beast (Christian is injured in the accident that killed his sister). I wish the author had stuck with one or the other; I think by using only one of the tropes the author could have also deepened the relationship better. Still, Michael's is always a good writer and I enjoy her books. This was just not one of my favorites of hers.
At first, I was a little hesitant when I heard this book was going to be premised off the Romeo & Juliet trope. However, as per usual, Jess Michaels delivers an excellent, satisfying story that weaves only the best elements of these classic stories into her own tale. I loved Ava's practicality and frankness juxtaposed against Christian's early blindness to revenge. The scene in the office outlining the terms of Ava & Christian's bargain made me laugh out loud and I wanted to cheer for Ava when she stood up to Christian in the gardens regarding their families' feuding and the consequences thereof. I think one of the best scenes in the book came in Matilda's bedroom - emotional and poignant, it represented a real, tangible change in Ave & Christian's relationship and connection to one another. Laura's actions came a little out of left field, so that was a surprise. Liam seemed a little too cold, but since the emotional development of this story centered on Christian, Liam's actions are acceptable I suppose. The ending was heartwarming, but rather abrupt and left some loose ends, but since this is the first in a series it was understandable to set up the remaining books. All in all, a great read and highly recommended.
As a side note, I am interested to see the interactions between Liam and Portia. Something about the way Portia talked about him after he "rescued" Ava piqued my interest. (Also, trust Portia to get to the heart of Ava's story. What are best friends for, right?)
